Former head of state and National Peace Committee Chairman, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said that N30,000 minimum wage is inadequate for meaningful growth.
According to him the N30,000 cannot take Nigerians anywhere neither can it develop them.
He stated this at the Peace, Unity, and Reconciliation Summit in Jalingo, organized by the Taraba Independent Peace Committee.
Abdulsalami urged Nigerians, especially in Taraba State, to tap into local resources to enhance their living standards.
Represented by Rev. Fr. Atah Bakindo, head of the secretariat of Kukah Centre and National Peace Committee, Abdulsalami called on Taraba residents to reject violence and embrace peace to utilize the state’s abundant natural resources for development.
Despite Taraba’s resource wealth, Abdulsalami emphasized that development hinges on the essential foundations of peace and unity.
“I want to plead with the Nigerian president that the N30,000 national minimum wage cannot take Nigerians anywhere, it is not acceptable anywhere in the world and it cannot develop anybody, there is an urgent need to increase the wages for the betterment of our growth.
“I want to urge the people of Taraba State to reconcile whatever kind of difference that created clashes and disunity, you cannot harness any development if you are not in peace and unity, you are fortunate to have the natural resources, peace and unity is the only bedrock of development,” he said.
Addressing the Nigerian president, he pleaded for a reconsideration of the N30,000 national minimum wage, asserting its inadequacy on a global scale.
Abdulsalami urged Taraba’s people to reconcile differences, stressing that peace and unity constitute the fundamental bedrock for development amidst their fortunate access to natural resources.
