The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said that no responsible government can ignore the dangers posed by illegal structures that threaten lives, disrupt development, and compromise public safety.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, emphasised that enforcing urban planning laws is essential for maintaining order and protecting residents.

Oladejo explained that the demolition of illegal buildings across the state followed a transparent, law-driven process, with multiple warnings and engagement sessions held before enforcement began.

He described the exercise as a preventive measure rather than an act of cruelty, noting that it was aimed at averting disasters and restoring sanity to affected areas.

According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration demonstrated “restraint and compassion” by engaging stakeholders and granting several compliance extensions before taking action.

“Every measure taken by this government has been guided by due process and the public interest. Lagos cannot afford to allow illegal developments to thrive, especially when they endanger infrastructure, waterways, and the environment,” Oladejo said.

He noted that the enforcement campaign aligns with the state’s long-term vision of urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and creating safer, well-planned communities.

Oladejo cautioned against portraying the demolitions as politically motivated, stressing that the state’s priority is maintaining order and protecting lives and property.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagos will not be lectured on governance by those who fail to understand that development requires discipline, consistency, and respect for the rule of law,” he stated.

The spokesperson reaffirmed that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to infrastructural renewal and strict adherence to planning regulations as part of its vision for a liveable and resilient megacity.

“Lagos will continue to uphold lawful governance, ensure strategic urban renewal, and demonstrate genuine compassion,” he added.

Oladejo added that the ongoing operations are not punitive but aimed at ensuring the city grows in line with approved layouts and environmental standards, while prioritising the safety, dignity, and prosperity of all residents.
