The family of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, have been thrown into mourning following the death of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi.
Nnamdi reportedly passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 21 months old.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed in an official statement issued by a member of Chimamanda’s communication team, Omawumi Ogbe, who described the loss as a devastating moment for the Adichie-Esege family.
“We’re deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie & Dr Ivara Esege’s twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed on Wednesday, 7th of January 2026, after a brief illness. He was 21 months old,” the statement read.
Ogbe noted that the family is “devastated by this profound loss” and appealed to the public and the media to respect their privacy during what she described as an “incredibly difficult time.”
She further called for compassion, prayers, and understanding as the family mourns in private.
“The family is devastated by this profound loss, and we request that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time. We ask for your grace and prayers as they mourn in private,” the statement added.
The statement also added that no further public communication will be made regarding the tragedy, while expressing gratitude to well-wishers for their support and respect for the family’s need for seclusion.
Adichie, one of Africa’s most celebrated literary voices and author of Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Purple Hibiscus, has often kept her family life private.
