The Hidden Reason Behind the Push to Eradicate Old Prepaid Meters”
By Damilola Omosebi
In what can only be described as a grand deception, millions of Nigerian electricity consumers are being forced into a fraudulent billing system disguised as “progress.” The recent aggressive push by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to phase out old prepaid meters in favor of new “smart” meters has raised suspicions—and for good reason. Investigations reveal that these new meters may be deliberately manipulated to inflate bills, while the so-called “Band A” categorization has become nothing more than a tool for systemic extortion.
The Prepaid Meter Purge: What Are They Hiding?
For years, Nigerians relied on prepaid meters to control their electricity expenses, paying for only what they used. But suddenly, DisCos are labeling these meters “obsolete,” insisting on replacements. Why the urgency?
Sources within the industry confess that the old prepaid meters were too transparent; they couldn’t be tweaked to charge arbitrary rates. The new meters, however, are programmable, allowing DisCos to adjust consumption rates remotely, leading to inexplicable bill surges.
“The moment they installed the new meter, my bill tripled—even when my usage hadn’t changed,” lamented Adeola Martins, a Lagos resident. “They tell us it’s more efficient, but where is the efficiency when we’re paying more for darkness?”
Band A Billing Fraud: A Nationwide Scam
The introduction of the Band A classification was supposed to guarantee 20+ hours of electricity for those paying premium rates. But how many Nigerians actually enjoy this service? Reports from across the country show that even those classified under Band A still suffer prolonged blackouts, yet are billed exorbitantly.
“They moved my area to Band A, but we barely get 12 hours of light,” said Chinedu Okeke, an Abuja businessman. “When I complained, they said the problem was ‘temporary.’ But my bills are permanent!”
This isn’t just inefficiency—it’s organized fraud. DisCos are using Band A as a smokescreen to justify inflated bills while delivering the same erratic power supply.
Nigerians Must Resist This Exploitation
The truth is now clear: The push to eliminate old prepaid meters isn’t about modernization—it’s about control and profit. With the new meters, DisCos can silently manipulate consumption data, leaving consumers helpless. The Band A categorization is another layer of deception, forcing Nigerians to pay for electricity they never receive.
This is a call to action. Every Nigerian must:
- Demand transparency in meter calibration.
- Reject forced meter replacements without proof of fairness.
- Challenge the Band A fraud
if the light isn’t steady, the bill shouldn’t be high.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) must be held accountable. If these manipulations continue unchecked, the already suffocating cost of living will skyrocket further.
Enough Is Enough
Nigerians are tired of being exploited. The eradication of prepaid meters and the Band A scam must be condemned and resisted at all levels. The question remains: Who will stand up for the people when the system is rigged against them?
The power is in our hands—before they take that too.
