The Ondo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers; Comrade Victor Amoko; has declared the need to support the Governor of Ondo State; Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu; for a second term in office.
Speaking with PRESENTNG, the NUT Chairman cited reasons why members of his Union and every resident of Ondo State should throw their support for the Governor’s second term aspiration. Amoko specifically saluted the Governor’s efforts at the prompt payment of salaries and other emoluments.
“There is need to support Mr. Governor. The government is not owing us. We have to give kudos to Mr. Governor. The Governor pays us; though in tranches. But, we have to be thankful, because other states have retrenched workers; some states have even slashed the salaries of their workers. But, ours in Ondo State is not like that. We thank God for Governor Akeredolu.”

On the issue of reopening of schools in the state, the Union expressed their satisfaction and described it as a welcome idea. The Chairman however called for a concerted effort at checkmating the further spread of the Covid-19 as schools resume.
“As a Union, we’re satisfied with the reopening of schools. It is a welcome idea that the government deemed it fit for the schools to reopen.”
“The prices of the effect of Covid-19 will be paid by every individual. Government cannot do everything alone. The parents, the schools and the PTA must lend a helping hand in the provision of materials to ensure that this virus doesn’t spread. In other words, all hands must be on deck to checkmate the further spread of the virus especially as schools resume now.”
“We cannot continue to jeopardize the future of the pupils. That is why we are enjoining the government to do the needful. Let the pupils go to school, let the government clear the bushes and fumigate the environment, let the parents provide nose-masks for their wards, let the teachers impart the knowledge to the students as well.”
“Ours; as a Union; is to educate our teachers to comply with the Covid-19 protocols. These education and information will guide them in bringing out the productivity in them.”
Buttressing the Chairman’s points, the Senior Assistant Secretary General of the Union; Comrade Olugbenga Ajibade; also expressed his happiness at government’s decision to reopen schools for terminal classes, describing it as a welcome development. He also appealed to the government for proper sanitization of schools’ environments to prevent hazards and to enhance the conducive state of the institutions for learning activities.
“The environmental condition of the schools have to be taken care of. This has to be done to prevent hazards. There should be clearing of bushes, fumigation of the environments and boosting the security apparatus of the schools. Other health measures like the provision of the temperature gauge, hand sanitizers and hand-washing equipments should be put in place by the government to prevent the escalation of the virus.”
“It is becoming boring for us to be at home. We want to work. But precautionary measures have to be put in place. This is to be on the safer side. This is to make the schools conducive for learning. As a Trade Union, we are concerned with the welfare of; not only our members; but also, that of our students.”
