The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for allegedly conducting an illegal marriage ceremony without parental consent.
Deputy Commander General of the Board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.
He said those apprehended include the groom, the bride, and three others who acted as witnesses and representatives during the ceremony.
According to Aminuddeen, the marriage was contracted with a dowry of N10,000, below the minimum threshold recognised under Islamic legal standards.
He said the union contravened Islamic and legal marital procedures, adding that the board had launched an investigation into the incident.
The Hisbah official appealed to parents to monitor their children’s social and marital activities to prevent similar occurrences.
The development comes as the Kano State Government prepares to conduct a mass wedding for 2,000 couples under its community marriage programme.
Aminuddeen noted that all intending couples under the scheme are required to register and undergo compulsory medical screening to determine their health status
