The Kebbi State governor, Comrade Dr. Nasiru Idris, on Wednesday signed the minimum wage of N75,000 for Kebbi State workers into law, as he gave the State Ministry for Finance 72 hours to commence the payment effective from this month’s salary.

The governor, who received the reports of the minimum wage committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, said he decided that the committee should work out modalities for the payment and come up with a reasonable and acceptable amount.

“To the glory of God, the committee worked round the clock and came up with N72,000, N73,000, and N75,000. I want to say that I used my discretion to choose the N75,000 as the minimum wage payable to the state workers, which we are witnessing the signing of into law today.”

While speaking to pressmen, shortly after the governor’s signing of the minimum wage, the Accountant General of the State, Muhammadu Bello Ibrahim, promised that the State Ministry of Finance would heed the governor’s directive to ensure the payment of the minimum wage this month.

The State AG called on the state workers to redouble their efforts to ensure productivity and bring the confidence the governor has in them to bear in the discharge of their duties.

In his statement, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajearo, who witnessed the signing of the minimum wage into law, called on other governors across the country to emulate their Kebbi State counterparts to ensure immediate payment of the minimum wage to their workers.
