Members of organised labour are currently protesting at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Lagos and Abuja.
The workers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, stormed offices of electricity distribution companies on Monday to protest the Band A tariff hike.
The labour unions are calling for a reversal of the increase and a return to the negotiating table.
Labour has also shut NERC offices in Jos, Akwa Ibom, Benin, Kaduna and in other capital cities across the country.
The action of the labour union is expected to lead to the shutdown of the Abuja headquarters of the NERC, the Ministry of Power and state offices of power distribution companies.
Recall that the NERC announced the hike in the electricity tariff for Band A customers at a press briefing in Abuja on April 3, revealing that those affected would pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous rate of N68/kWh.
