The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, has said that the November 2 local government election in the state would not be conducted with Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) because of its ‘disappointing nature’.
The Chairman of ABSIEC, Professor George Chima, disclosed this on Saturday while officially unveiling the timetable for the local government poll.
“We know what happened to BVAS, we are not using BVAS,” he said.
Chima added that the election will be free and transparent, assuring that the will of Abia voters will be reflected in the outcome.
Noting that adequate security would be deployed for the elections, he assured that officials of the agency are prepared to discharge their duties creditably.
He advised political parties and contestants to play the game according to the rules, warning that the LG election will not be business as usual.
The ABSIEC chairman, who said that his office is independent of the Abia State government, dispelled fears among members of the opposition parties that the polls may be conducted in favour of the ruling Labour Party, LP.
However, many chairmen of opposition parties, who were at the event, called for a little shift in the date of the election to enable them prepare better
