Libyan authorities have started an investigation into the death of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
According to the country’s public prosecutor, he was shot dead in Zintan, a city in northwest Libya.
Forensic teams have been sent to the scene to gather evidence, and officials are working to identify those responsible.
Investigators are also speaking with witnesses to piece together what happened during the attack.
Seif al-Islam was reportedly killed by an armed group that entered his home in Zintan.
His lawyer confirmed the identity of the attackers is not yet known.
Libya has continued to face instability since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
The country is split between a UN-backed government in Tripoli and an eastern administration led by Khalifa Haftar, with neither side commenting on the killing.
Reacting to the assassination, Moussa al-Kouni, vice-president of the Presidential Council, has called for an end to political violence and condemned the killing.
“No to political assassinations, no to achieving demands by force, and no to violence as a language or a means of expression,” he wrote on X.
