The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Enugu Operations Office and in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has distributed relief materials to support households affected by an attack by unknown gunmen in Nkalaha Community, located in the Ishielu/Ezza North Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State.

It will be recalled that earlier this year, Nkalaha came under attack from unidentified gunmen, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and damage to farmland. In the aftermath, the NEMA Enugu Operations Office and Ebonyi State SEMA conducted a joint assessment to determine the extent of the damage and the urgent needs of the affected population.

Flagging off the relief distribution on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the NEMA Head of the Enugu Operations Office, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, represented by Mrs. Shantel Chukwu, expressed the Federal Government’s sympathy to the affected families. She stated that the relief items, approved by the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, were intended to alleviate the immediate suffering of the victims, though not a replacement for their losses.

Mrs. Echeazu also called on local government authorities and community leaders to intensify efforts toward peace and security by promoting dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect. She encouraged the establishment of community watch and peacekeeping groups, collaboration with government-led peace and conflict resolution efforts, and the involvement of local authorities and peacebuilding organizations where necessary. According to her, such measures will foster a safer environment and reduce disaster risk within the community.

In his remarks, the Rt. Hon. Chief Joseph Nwobasi (JP), representing the Ishielu/Ezza North Federal Constituency, expressed deep gratitude to the Federal Government and NEMA for their timely and targeted intervention. He assured the affected population that the relief materials would be distributed transparently and equitably.

The distribution event was witnessed by several dignitaries, including the representative of the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Barr. Ikechukwu Alobu; Rt. Hon. Chief Joseph Nwobasi (JP), Member representing Ishielu/Ezza North Federal Constituency; the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Peace Ifeoma Agwu; and the Traditional Ruler of Nkalaha, HRH Eze Thompson Elebor Ede.

Community leaders and beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Federal Government and NEMA for providing the much-needed relief support and ensuring its fair distribution.
