Nigerians on Monday took to Social media to react to the planned exit of South African Retail Outlets , Shoprite.
The company announced that it had started a formal process to consider the potential sale of all or a majority stake in its supermarkets in Nigeria, it said in a trading statement for the 52 weeks to end June, which was released on Monday, August 3.
According to the latest update, Shoprite’s Nigerian business posted a -6.3% decline in sales for the year ending June 2020.
The announcement to exit the comes about two months after another South African retailer, Mr Price, said it would close its Nigerian business.
However, the news of Shoprite’s exit has sparked various reactions from Twitter users.
@MrOdanz wrote: Mr Price has closed shop and left Nigeria. Apparently Shoprite too is closing its operations and leaving Nigeria after selling its stakes.
Very soon multichoice and MTN might also leave. Buhari is really doing a great job and Nigerians are lucky to have him as President.

Some are saying Buhari's policy was the reason Shoprite is leaving. Laughable
Shoprite is also considering closing stores in other non SA outlets.
How can they sustain a business in Nigeria with prices like N500 for corn when we've fresher & cheaper alternatives. pic.twitter.com/j6hnSqhQOF— Abiodun Bello 🇳🇬 (@Abdul_A_Bello) August 3, 2020

NO MORE EXCURSIONS AT SHOPRITE
As one of the added benefits of Shoprite leaving Nigeria, at least, Abeokuta people will start going back to Olumo Rock for excursions. Nigerians travel interstate from Oriade Local Government to Shoprite in Lagos because of its yellow nylon bag. pic.twitter.com/2BYgilTQQB— Son of David (@DrOlusesan) August 3, 2020

@chubei:Shoprite leaving Nigeria is a good thing, these south Africans were gradually taking over our economy. Next should be MTN & DSTV!
@drpenking; Shoprite leaving Nigeria is like a double-edged sword. On one hand,it shows how pathetic the economic situation of Nigeria has become. It is now very difficult for businesses to thrive. On the other hand,it is a blessing to local businessmen which Shoprite had oppressed for years.
@biyitheplug: As Shoprite is leaving Nigeria, a lot of Shoprite workers will remain unemployed, most won’t get a new job anytime soon, how will a married man feed his family?
Only the strong hearted survives in this country tbh.
