The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II has installed Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, as the Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source, declaring that Africans remain “one people and one big family” beyond modern borders.

The historic installation, held at Afewonro Park within the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, drew traditional rulers, political leaders and cultural dignitaries from across Yorubaland and Ghana, underscoring Ile-Ife’s enduring role as the spiritual source of the Yoruba race.

Receiving President Mahama amid fanfare and tight security, the Ooni, who is also the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, described the Ghanaian leader as a symbol of African unity, cultural continuity and economic reform.

“This palace is not new to you. You have been part of our journey. You have grown with us in our midst,” the Ooni said, recalling Mahama’s long-standing relationship with Ile-Ife even before his return to office as Ghana’s president.

The monarch stressed that colonial boundaries should not overshadow Africa’s shared ancestry, pointing to cultural and linguistic similarities between the Yoruba and Ga people.

“In Ghana you say Akwaabo, here we say Ekaabo. Are they not the same? We are one people and one big family,” he declared.

Ogunwusi revealed that during one of Mahama’s earlier visits to Ile-Ife after leaving office, prayers were offered with a prophetic declaration that he would return to leadership, a moment he said has now been fulfilled.

“To the glory of God, today you are truly a reformer. Immediately you assumed office for a second term, Ghana’s economy experienced a remarkable turnaround. We are very proud of you,” the Ooni said, praising Mahama’s “economic touch” and projecting that his influence could one day extend to leading the African Union.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, described Mahama as a bridge-builder at a time of growing regional tension.

“At a moment when many are beating the drums of war, President Mahama chose dialogue,” Adeleke said, applauding his mediation efforts between ECOWAS and Sahelian states.

According to Adeleke, the installation reflects Mahama’s lifelong commitment to peace, diplomacy and regional stability, noting that his influence extends far beyond West Africa.

“Mahama is truly a global peace ambassador. This honour is well deserved,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama expressed deep gratitude to the Ooni and the people of Ile-Ife, reaffirming the ancestral bond between Ghana and Nigeria.

“The people of Accra trace their roots to Ile-Ife. We are one family,” Mahama said, dedicating the chieftaincy title to the people of Ghana.

The Ghanaian leader pledged to use his position to strengthen ties between both countries and promote reconciliation within the West African sub-region.

“As long as I remain President of Ghana, I will work to bring our countries closer and help bridge the gap between ECOWAS and those who have drifted away,” he assured.
