In a continued effort to curb the proliferation of illegal arms, troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN have successfully arrested five notorious gunrunners and seized a cache of weapons and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Plateau State.
The operation, which took place from midnight on September 16 until the early hours of September 17, 2024, involved a raid on the hideout of a suspected gunrunner, Mohammed Sani at the Naraguta Mining Area, Bayameni, along Bauchi Road in Jos North LGA.
Military Public Information Officer, Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major Stephen Nantip Zhakom, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday said four additional suspects were also apprehended during the operation.
The recovered arms and ammunition include: two AK-47 rifles, one Fabrique Nationale automatic rifle, fourteen AK-47 magazines, one Fabrique Nationale magazine, 5,316 rounds of 7.62mm (Special), ninety-eight rounds of 7.62mm (NATO), forty-three rounds of 9mm.
The suspects are currently being interrogated to gather more intelligence that could lead to the arrest of other syndicate members and the dismantling of the gunrunning supply chain.
