The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed that its personnel have rescued two students of the Federal University of Lafia, FULafia, who were abducted from their residence.

Recall that on the night of 6 December 2023, gunmen invaded off-campus student accommodation in the Gandu community, a hub housing over 6,000 students near the university. Initial reports indicated that approximately 17 students were kidnapped during this attack.

Following the abductions, students organised protests demanding the unconditional release of their peers and calling for enhanced security measures in and around the university environment.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the kidnappers stormed a student lodge behind Nasara Estate in Tudun Kauri, Lafia, and took the students captive.

Following this, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, ordered immediate action and swiftly mobilised operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to track down the perpetrators.

This led to a rescue operation, which involved an exchange of gunfire between the kidnappers and police personnel, resulting in the kidnappers abandoning their victims and fleeing in different directions.

The police arrested a suspect, Ibrahim Musa from Abuni village in Awe Local Government Area, who is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

Commending the operatives for their bravery, Commissioner Jauro reassured residents of the police command’s dedication to combating crime and urged officers to remain vigilant in their mission to maintain security across the state.

In December 2023, the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) in Nasarawa State experienced a series of student abductions that raised significant concerns about security in the area
