The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation has donated N1 billion to assist victims of the recent flood disaster in Borno.
Alhaji Sani Lugga, a member of the committee and the fifth Wazirin Katsina, announced the donation in a statement issued in Katsina on Monday.
He stated, “Due to the unprecedented flood catastrophe in Maiduguri, Borno, the committee convened an emergency meeting via Zoom on Sept. 11, 2024.
“During this meeting, we approved the immediate allocation of N1 billion for the procurement and supply of urgent relief materials for the flood victims in Borno, to be facilitated through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).”
Lugga noted that the 34-member committee was established by former President Goodluck Jonathan on Oct. 9, 2012, with Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba serving as Co-Chairmen. Other prominent members include Alhaji Mohamed Indimi, Dr. Mike Adenuga, Alhaji Karami Isyaku-Rabi’u, Mrs. Folorusho Alakija, Hajiya Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman, and Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr, with Hajiya Hajara Modu as Secretary.
He emphasized that the committee has been retained by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu, continuing its annual support for flood victims across Nigeria.
“As a member of this esteemed presidential committee, I feel compelled to clarify recent media inaccuracies regarding comments made by our distinguished Co-Chairman, Alhaji Dangote, during his visit to Borno.
” From the N2 billion donation announced by Dangote, N1 billion represents the committee’s contribution for procuring relief materials through NEMA, while the remaining N1 billion was donated by the Dangote Foundation.”
Lugga concluded with a prayer, saying, “We implore Allah to inspire all individuals and organizations to assist the victims of the Borno flood and others affected by natural disasters.”
