Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, as a public holiday to mark the first day of Muharram, signifying the beginning of the Islamic year 1447 AH.

The decision, according to a statement signed by Abubakar Bawa, Press Secretary to the Governor, is intended to allow Muslims across the state to observe and celebrate the Hijrah New Year.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in a goodwill message to the people of the state, encouraged the Muslim Ummah to use the occasion for deep reflection, spiritual renewal, and a closer connection with their Creator.

“The start of a new Islamic year is a time for honest self-evaluation. We must look back at our actions, correct our shortcomings, and build on our strengths,” the governor stated.

He highlighted the importance of embracing the moral and spiritual teachings of the Islamic calendar, while also reiterating his administration’s continued support for Islamic development and religious activities in the state.

Governor Aliyu extended his heartfelt wishes for a peaceful and blessed New Year to all Muslims in Sokoto and beyond
