Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has visited the family of Mrs. Chinwe Igwe, the pregnant trader who was killed when operatives of the state-backed Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) opened fire at Onitsha Main Market, on Tuesday.
Three other people were also injured in the shooting.
In a statement yesterday, Soludo described the incident as “utterly condemnable” and promised that those behind it would be held accountable.
“The unfortunate incident at Onitsha Main Market yesterday is utterly condemnable. I met with the family of the late Ms. Chinwe Igwe today and visited the injured at the hospital. Law enforcement officers must always operate within the law, and those who exceed their authority will face the full weight of the law,” he said.
The governor assured the bereaved family and the injured victims of the state’s support, noting that such acts of lawlessness do not reflect Anambra’s values.
“We stand in solidarity with those who have experienced unjust treatment. This is not reflective of our values as a people. Anambra is the Light of the Nation, and we must uphold this. May the soul of Ms. Chinwe Igwe and all the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace,” Soludo added.
The killing of Mrs. Igwe, widely described as an innocent victim caught in the chaos, has sparked anger among traders and residents, who are calling for urgent reforms in the operations of OCHA Brigade.
