The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye has extolled the virtues of Senator Ayo Fasanmi, one of the few remaining direct followers of the Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo who just passed on today at the ripe age of 94.
The Speaker in a release signed by his Special Adviser on media, Akogun Tai Oguntayo, described Senator Fasanmi as “a loyal follower of Awolowo to the end of his earthly sojourn.”
Describing Fasanmi as a titan, an icon and illustrious son of Ekiti,” Afuye said he was a leader of Yoruba nation and indeed Nigeria, who led by example.
Going down the memory lane, Afuye said, “Senator Ayo Fasanmi resented cant and humbug and his life is a study in honesty, service and integrity. He lived a life devoid of ostentation which bordered on asceticism”. He was a contented man.
He opined that the Yoruba nation and indeed Nigeria as whole had lost one of its moral compass.
“I personally have lost a father and mentor whom I’ve looked up to as a guide in my political career. Any opportunity of meeting with Baba was one of first hand link with the past when he would tell me details of his and that of the Yoruba and Nigeria’s political trajectory. He saw and was part of history,” Afuye said.
On behalf of the Ekiti Legislature, Afuye commiserated with the immediate family of Papa and prayed for the repose of the soul of the great Afenifere Leader.
