The senator representing Abia north, Orji Uzor Kalu says security agencies stopped President Bola Tinubu from travelling to Kebbi after the abduction of 25 students of the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) Maga.
The lawmaker spoke in a video posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday.
Kalu said the president had planned to visit Kebbi but was advised against the trip for security reasons.
‘The president was even planning to go to Kebbi but the security stopped him and asked the vice-president to go’, the lawmaker said.
He said Kashim Shettima, the vice-president, went to Kebbi in President Tinubu’s place and had since returned to brief the president.
The former Abia state governor said President Tinubu cancelled engagements in South Africa, Angola and other countries to stay in Abuja.
He said the president remained at home to mourn the victims of the recent church attack in Kwara state and hold ‘serious in-house meetings’ with security chiefs.
Kalu said Tinubu had been ‘very sad’ since learning of the incidents in Kebbi and Kwara, adding that the mood in the national assembly reflected the president’s concern.
He said Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba state, cancelled a planned event to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of the recent incidents.
He said several other activities across the country had been suspended.
‘So, President Tinubu has shown leadership; he has shown concern’, Kalu said.
‘He has shown fatherly care for the children they kidnapped in Kebbi; and this is how it should be’.
The APC chieftain expressed confidence that the country would overcome its current challenges.
