US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the Supreme Court of the United States after it struck down his sweeping tariff policy in a 6–3 decision on Friday.

According to reports, Trump reacted angrily during a White House breakfast with governors, condemning the ruling and reportedly launching into an expletive-filled outburst.

He described the court’s decision as a “disgrace to our nation.”

The justices ruled that Trump’s tariffs were not authorized under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which allows a president to regulate trade only in “unusual and extraordinary” circumstances tied to a declared national emergency.

In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the president cannot unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited “amount, duration, and scope” without clear approval from Congress. Roberts was joined by conservative Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, along with the court’s three liberal justices.

Lawmakers, particularly Democrats, welcomed the ruling, calling it a win for consumers and a reaffirmation of the constitutional separation of powers.

The decision follows earlier rulings by lower courts, including the United States Court of International Trade, which had determined that the administration exceeded its authority in declaring a national emergency to justify the tariffs.

The Supreme Court’s judgment effectively ends one of Trump’s major economic initiatives, setting up a fresh political clash over executive power and trade policy.
