Two Boko Haram improvised explosive device (IED) experts have surrendered to the Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Monguno, Borno State.
The duo identified as Abubakar Mohammed and Bana Modu were said to have been assigned to plant bombs on the roads leading to Doron Baga and a fish farm in Baga, both in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno state by their commanders.
But instead of carrying out the order they surrendered to MNJTF operatives.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed this on Monday, April 22, 2024, said the MNJTF has reported continued surrender of terrorists in its Area of Operations.
“Among the latest to lay down their arms were two individuals identified as improvised explosive device (IED) experts, 19-year-old Abubakar Mohammed (alias Garba) and 13-year-old Bana Modu,” the report reads.
The surrender took place on 21 April 2024, marking a notable success in the ongoing campaign to dismantle Boko Haram’s operations in the region.
The Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) experts surrendered to the troops during a clearance operation on Sunday, April 21, Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Military Public Information Officer – Ndjamena, said in a statement in Maiduguri on Monday.
He said the suspects, who were under the age of 30 were in possession of two IEDs, two mobile phones and N53,000 cash that were recovered from them.
He said that on interrogation, the suspects said that they were ordered by their Boko Haram commanders to plant IEDs on the roads leading to Doron Baga and a fish farmll in Baga, both in Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.
“Instead of carrying out their mission, they decided to abandon their task, escape with the IEDs and surrender to the MNJTF.
“Their decision was influenced by the MNJTF recently concluded Operation NASHRUL SALAM, a non-kinetic operation, and the sector’s personal engagement strategy with relevant sources, showcasing the effectiveness of psychological operations in the fight against terrorism,”he said.
Abdullahi said that the MNJTF was committed to encouraging other terrorists in the Lake Chad to come out, surrender and lay down their arms.
The official pledged that troops would leave no stone unturned to rid the region of terrorists and ensure sustainable peace
