Four astronauts from the International Space Station have been evacuated to Earth following undisclosed medical concerns, marking the first medical evacuation in the orbital laboratory’s 25-year history.
The Crew-11 team safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean early Thursday, cutting short their mission which was scheduled to run until mid-February, according to NASA footage.
While NASA officials stressed that the return was not classified as an emergency, the American space agency has declined to provide specific details about the medical situation, citing privacy concerns.
NASA’s chief health and medical officer, Dr. James Polk, explained that “lingering risk” and unresolved questions about the diagnosis necessitated the expedited departure from the space station.
The crew had docked at the ISS in early August and was originally expected to remain in orbit until a replacement crew arrived in mid-February.
However, the medical concerns prompted NASA to bring them home approximately two months ahead of schedule.
The development represents an unprecedented event in the history of the ISS, which has maintained continuous human presence in orbit since November 2000. Over the past quarter-century, the station has hosted thousands of experiments and hundreds of astronauts from various countries without requiring a medical evacuation.
NASA has not disclosed whether the medical issue affected one or all four crew members, or the nature of the health concern that warranted the early return. The agency maintains strict protocols regarding astronaut health information to protect individual privacy rights.
