Prof. Adeyeye Explains Rationale Behind Ban on Sachet and Sub-200ml Alcoholic Beverages

The NAFDAC boss cited serious public health concerns linked to the easy accessibility and abuse of such products, particularly among youths.

She explained that the decision followed extensive consultations involving the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and industry stakeholders, and is aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm, not prohibiting alcohol consumption. Approved alcoholic products remain legal in compliant packaging formats.

Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement nationwide, in collaboration with relevant agencies, while engaging stakeholders responsibly.

She called for public and industry cooperation, stressing that the protection of lives and public health remains the Agency’s foremost priority.
