The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, YBSIEC, has scheduled elections across the state’s 17 local government areas for Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Damaturu by Mohammed Nguru, Permanent Member I of YBSIEC, during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security agencies, political party representatives under the Inter-Party Advisory Council, and members of the press.

Nguru noted that the timetable has received the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni and emphasized that the elections are intended to strengthen grassroots democracy.

“This stakeholders’ meeting is critical to the success of the forthcoming elections,” he said.

“Conducting a credible election requires cooperation and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.”

He added that the Commission is finalizing comprehensive election guidelines for political parties, which will outline procedures, timelines, and requirements.

“We urge political parties to study the guidelines carefully and comply fully to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process,” Nguru noted.

Nguru also encouraged parties to field strong candidates, stressing the importance of leadership quality at the local government level:

“Political parties are encouraged to present candidates of quality, repute, and substance. The kind of leadership we produce locally will directly affect service delivery, accountability, and community development.”

Regarding eligibility, Nguru explained: “Chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old; councillorship candidates at least 25 years old.

“All positions are open to eligible residents without gender discrimination.

“Candidates must be of sound mind, not bankrupt, bona fide residents, and have a minimum educational qualification of a school certificate or equivalent.

“All aspirants will undergo mandatory security screening.”

Nomination fees have been set at N300,000 for chairmanship, N250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and N200,000 for councillorship positions.

“The Commission will take full responsibility for organizing and supervising the elections and assures the people of Yobe State that the process will be free, fair, credible, and peaceful,” Nguru affirmed.

He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders and urged eligible citizens to actively participate in the electoral process.
